NEW YEAR'S EVE PARTY

Day 3 (2020). Lyrics by Dan Zlotnick

It’s a New Year’s Eve party and I’m shaking hands

With shoeshines and neckties and fifteen year plans

Well I’ve been living pretty much day-to-day

And I’m starting to doubt that I’ve been doing okay

The old man in the suit sitting down by the drinks

Who never fails to tell you what it is that he thinks

He invites me to sit ‘cause he can tell by my face

That I don’t like this party, these people, and I don’t like my place

He says “The shoes on your feet don’t need shine

Just grab all the love you can find

Here’s something that you might not know

Everyone here, we make it up as we go.”

But how can that be with their 401k’s

Their homes in suburbia with the mortgages paid

He said to watch as the seconds tick away on the screen,

It’s one at a time for them, for you, and for me

“The shoes on your feet don’t need shine

Just grab all the love you can find

Here’s something you might not know

Everyone here, we make it up as we go.”

We make it up as we go
