WITHOUT FRUIT

Without Fruit (single) (2021). Lyrics by Dan Zlotnick

Mosquitos bite my legs in this Adirondack Chair
Cicadas singing their song through the cooling August air
In the breeze the red pine trees start dancing oh so slow
And pine cone falls to me and sparks this little note

A tree grows fine without fruit
But a tree can’t go on without roots

I start thinking about my room full of shoes I never wear
And dust-caked baseball trophies in first place for sitting there
The pine cone in my hand, my bare feet on the earth
Like trophies that remind you what that stuff is really worth

A tree grows fine without fruit
But a tree can’t go on without roots

I think about your face and how I’ll get to watch it change
Experience and beauty how they pile on with age
My knee shakes at the thought of you leaving me behind
So the first heart to give out, I damn sure hope it’s mine

A tree grows fine without fruit
But a tree can’t live without roots
And I can walk without shoes
But I couldn’t take one step without you
